The Inner Mongolia Academy of Social Sciences was established in November 1979. It is a comprehensive philosophy and social science research institution directly under the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is a strong ideological and theoretical highland for researching, interpreting and promoting Marxism and socialist theory with Chinese characteristics in the autonomous region, a high-end academic palace of philosophy and social sciences, and an important high-end think tank.

The Inner Mongolia Academy of Social Sciences is a public welfare first-class institution directly under the Party Committee of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. At present, there are 23 internal institutions, including 15 research institutes (academies) such as the Institute of Marxism, the Academy of Forging a Strong Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation, the Institute of Philosophy and Religion, the Institute of Economics, the Institute of Pastoral Area Development, the Institute of History, the Institute of Language, the Institute of Literature, the Institute of Northern Multilingual Documents, the Institute of Nationalities, the Institute of Political Science and Law, the Institute of Sociology, the Institute of Northern Frontier Culture, the Institute of Public Management, and the Institute of Inner Mongolia "the Belt and Road". There are also 6 functional departments such as the general office, the scientific research management department, the personnel department, the finance department, the Party-mass work department, and the retirees work department. There are also 2 scientific research auxiliary departments such as the magazine office and the library.
